Upsilon Alpha Omega, the Gwinnett Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was chartered in Gwinnett County on January 29, 1994. One of the first challenges taken on by the chapter was to establish a scholarship for young women in Gwinnett County. The scholarship was named in honor of one of our chartering members, Mrs. Beauty P. Baldwin. Thus far, we have awarded numerous scholarships totaling thousands of dollars to college-bound high school seniors.

Upsilon Alpha Omega is offering a scholarship to high school seniors to further their educational opportunities. The scholarship focuses on marginalized or disadvantaged communities (male or female).   It is the chapter’s goal to promote post-secondary education endeavors. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following scholarship qualifications:

The women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Sigma Omicron Zeta Chapter of Gwinnett County invite eligible seniors to apply for our Beyond the Spectrum Scholarship.

The Beyond the Spectrum Scholarship provides support for deserving students who are bound for postsecondary education, are high school senior, and who is currently diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. We are offering two $500 scholarships.

The Brenden and Alex Elbaz Memorial Scholarship was initially established through the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation and was exclusive to a Lanier High School Student where his mother Joy Crowe was a teacher.

In 2011 Brenden Elbaz, at the age of 23, tragically died of a drug overdose. Nine years later, in 2020, Alex Elbaz at the age of 27, lost his life to Fentanyl Poisoning. Brothers Brenden and Alex were 5 years apart and very close. Both college students at the time. Brenden was a political science major at University of North Ga., formerly known as Gainesville State University, and Alex was a month from graduating Georgia Gwinnett College with a degree in accounting, which was received posthumously.

Brenden and Alex were loved immensely by their family, friends and all those that knew them. They both encountered personal challenges which they battled to overcome, and each will be remembered in that spirit.

• Acceptance to any accredited post- secondary institution
• Write a one-page essay explaining how you faced adversity in your life and exhibited strength in the face of personal challenges. Your essay must include how you were able to overcome the hardship and how it changed you; please share your dreams and aspirations as well. Deadline: March 15

The Capt. Hugh N. Mulzac Scholarship is merit-based and will provide financial assistance to students who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a U.S. Merchant Marine Academy or a U.S. Maritime college. It is open to students of all backgrounds and academic levels who have a strong commitment to the maritime industry and a desire to serve their country through the Merchant Marines. The scholarship amount is $1,000, and can be used to cover tuition fees, textbooks, and other educational expenses.

Requirements:

• You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0.
• You must exhibit good character and leadership skills.
• You must be a minority student (including but not limited to African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, or Asian American).
• You must be currently enrolled or attended Gwinnett County Public Schools.
• You must be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy or a U.S. Maritime college.

This annual one-time award of $500 – $1,000scholarship was established by Shelli-Ann McKenzie. As a Registered Nurse, Dacula resident, community leader, and Founder of Help for Healthcare Professionals (HHCP), a local nonprofit, she felt impressed to support local youth in pursuing a career in nursing.

In an effort to further motivate and incentivize high school students, the Clara Barton Aspiring Nurse Award & Scholarship will be presented annually. Begun in 1978, the Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering and Innovation Fair is the gateway event for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics projects (STEM) seeking to advance to state/national competition and the goal of competing against the world’s best at the International Science and Engineering Fair.

The Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering, and Innovation Fair hosts’ students from middle and high schools representing all Gwinnett County Public School (GCPS) clusters, as well as GCPS special entity schools and participating non-GCPS private or public schools that operate in Gwinnett County. Among the special entity schools competing each year is the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, a school consistently ranked as among the top ten best STEM high schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

A one-time award of $500 may be presented to a GCPS junior (or team) demonstrating exceptional creativity and problem solving at the regional level. The grant is intended to reimburse for registration, travel, shipping, and/or STEM project creation expenses related to competition at any level.

No application necessary.

A $1,000 will be presented in recognition of outstanding performance at the regional level to a one-time to a GCPS senior with plans to enroll full-time at the post-secondary level in a course of study in science, technology, engineering, or math. One or more recipients may be named. No application necessary.

There are 85 slots per year for current serving and prior service National Guard/Reserves soldier. Soldiers admitted through the Soldiers Admissions Program receive a fully funded four-year education valued at $450,000. These are very competitive and to be eligible the applicant must be a National Guard Soldier in good status. The West Point Admissions Committee determines admission for program.

Requirements:

• Be a U.S. citizen at the time of enrollment
• Be at least 17, but not older than 23 years of age on July 1 of the year entering USMA (or not older than 22 on July 1 of the year entering USMAPS)
• Be medically qualified by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board
• Be a high school graduate or have a GED
• Be of high moral character and never have been convicted of a felony
• Submit official scores on the standardized ACT exam or the SAT with writing test

The Minuteman Scholarships are two-to-four-year scholarships. Offers either full tuition and mandatory fees or a room and board flat rate of $12,000 per year, covering up to 4-years (8 semesters) of benefits, as well as a $1,200 per yearbook stipend. You will also receive monthly National Guard drill pay, GI Bill, training pay, and Army ROTC contract pay. The amount of scholarship awarded each year vary. Deadline: December 1

Annually, a one-time award of $1,000 will be presented to a GCPS Duluth HS graduating senior with plans to enroll full-time in an undergraduate course of study at an accredited college, university, technical, or trade school. Geri Flanary was the heart and soul of the school and was dedicated to caring for students in need. Because she was dedicated to helping those in true financial need succeed educationally, the ideal candidate will demonstrate financial need and will plan on serving the community to help the greater good. Deadline: February 1.

Requirements:

• Applicants must demonstrate financial need through being a free and reduced lunch recipient, 3.0 GPA
• Submit a letter of recommendation by a faculty member with whom the student works with during their senior year
• Submit a 600-word essay describing a challenge that the student has overcome, the plans the student has for his/her educational future, and how that future will impact the greater good and society.

The I Dare You Scholarship is a one-time $500 scholarship that will be awarded to a current GIVE West graduating senior who has positively improved their school-record through empathy, equity, and excellence while enrolled at GIVE Center West. The ideal candidate is one who has become a leader at GIVE West through motivating others.  There is no minimum GPA requirement for this scholarship, and funds can be applied to any form of postsecondary training or study that leads to future employment.

The Career and Technical Education Student of the Year is a competition held every year. Each GCPS high school has their own requirements for choosing its respective school’s CTE Student of the Year. See the CTE Department Chair at your school for more information on how to apply.

A one-time $1,000 scholarship given annually was established in 2022 in honor of Joel Alan Rutledge, a graduate of South Gwinnett High School in 1967.  Joel was a football and basketball player throughout his high school career and continued to film the football games for 48 years and basketball games for 25 years.  Joel loved South Gwinnett High School and bled BLUE!  Go Comets!

Requirements:

• Applicant must have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4-pt. scale
• a recommendation letter by a faculty member
• and has applied to a 2-year college, technical college, or a 4-year college or university
• Additionally, the student must be an active football or basketball player during the year of the scholarship award.

This is awarded in memory of Joe Abraham, who passed away in 2017 at the young age of 19 due to fentanyl poisoning. The award will provide a one-time $1,000 scholarship to one or more recipient with plans to attend a two or four-year college, university, or accredited technical school.

Eligible recipients can include high school seniors who have had issues with substance abuse and have turned their life around. Recipients can also be senior who is in recovery from a substance abuse disorder or any high school senior who has been adversely impacted by a family member that suffers from substance use disorder.

Requirements:

• Submit a written essay on one of the following topics:
  • Personal issues with substance abuse and how a path to success has been found.
  • Personal experience with a parent or sibling’s drug abuse issues and how a personal path to success has been found.
• Submit two letters of recommendation.

A one-time award of $1,000 in honor of community volunteer Judy Barrow Patterson will be presented to an Archer High School senior who has demonstrated service to others, leadership ability, good character, and has met the requirements for spring 2024 graduation.

Established in 2021 in honor of Celeste Norton Wilbanks, wife of former CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks, a one-time $5,000 scholarship will be awarded by sponsor Peach State Federal Credit Union.

Pearls of Excellence Scholarship provides support for deserving young ladies that are bound for postsecondary education, a high school senior from the Gwinnett County area, who exemplifies the founding principles of the Sorority: Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. We are offering five $1,000

This scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was established in memory of Gwinnett’s first middle school principal, Mr. Reid Mullins who served with distinction at Snellville Middle School. One or more seniors from South Gwinnett High School will be awarded.

This is a one-time award of $1,000 given to 1-2 recipients each year. Richardson Housing Group (RHG) established the RGH Workforce Scholarship to promote trade and technical education related to the construction/development industry. Celebrating 50 years as a small family business in Gwinnett County RHG recognizes the impact of trade and technical careers on our community. The intent of this scholarship is to provide financial support to students seeking trade or technical certifications and grow the local workforce.

Requirements:

• • Student must apply in their senior year of high school
  • Student must be a Gwinnett County resident
  • Student must submit an acceptance letter to a trade or technical school in Gwinnett County prior to receiving scholarship (attach to application)

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Rho Beta Sigma Alumni Chapter continues to provide support and serve the needs of Gwinnett County through the pillars of our organization: Bigger and Better Business, Education, and Social Action. Under our Education program, we desire to give scholarships in the amount of $1,914 to three graduating male Gwinnett County Public Schools high school seniors in the Spring of 2025.

The winners will meet the following guidelines:

• A record of volunteerism in the community through school and/or non-school sponsored activities
• Participation in at least one extracurricular school activity
• A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
• Plan to attend a college/university or technical school.

A one-time award of $500 to a student who exhibits good character, a love of learning, a desire to further his/her education, and is eligible for postsecondary education.

Application

The purpose of the Sweetwater Middle School Scholarship is to raise college awareness at Sweetwater MS, affect the graduation rate at Berkmar High School, increase the vertical work between our schools, rally community support, and assist deserving students with financial need. A $500 scholarship will be given to a senior who attended Sweetwater Middle School and Berkmar High School and plans to attend college in the fall.  One or more recipient may be named.

Four $500 scholarships will be awarded to seniors enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program or the Teaching as a Profession Program with plans to pursue a teaching degree in college. There will be one overall winner that will receive a $1,000 scholarship award. Teaching as a Profession Scholarships are sponsored by the GCPS Foundation and Georgia United Credit Union.

Application

The Gabe Andrews Scholarship is awarded to outstanding GSMST students who have excelled in English Language Arts. Recipients are nominated by their senior Language Arts teacher, and finalists are selected through a vote by the English Language Arts Department based on academic performance, behavior, and creativity.

This $1,000 award is given to at least one senior.

A one-time award of $2,000 for one or more college-bound GCPS seniors who are planning to attend a 2-year or 4-year college/university. Selection is based on participation in a leadership role in community service activities or volunteer work, as well as a commitment to making a difference in their community. Requirements:

• A GPA minimum 2.7, with plans to enroll in the fall 2022 as a full-time student in either an accredited 2-year or 4-year institution
• Submit a 300-word essay on a designated topic
• Submit a letter of recommendation from volunteer experience and school/faculty member

*Scholarship recipients are recognized during the April Board of Education meeting. Recipients will be notified of details. 

This scholarship is offered to a graduating senior (male or female) with plans to further their education at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Requirements:

• Must already be accepted to an accredited HBCU four-year college or university
• Must possess leadership potential and discernible good character
• Must demonstrate superior scholastic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA)

There will be an interview process for those selected. Opens January 2026.

The Watson Family Foundation Student of the Year Award is a one-time award of $2,000 that recognizes a student who has demonstrated significant growth in their career academy journey, academics, career development, behavior, character, and overall mindset. This award honors students who have shown perseverance, dedication, and a commitment to self-improvement, making a positive impact on both themselves and their community.

Eligibility Requirements: Must be nomination by a teacher, counselor, or administrator.

The nomination package should include:
o Be an active participant in a CTE academy program.
o Show measurable growth in academic performance and career readiness.
o Exhibit personal development in character, behavior, and leadership.
o Demonstrate resilience and a positive transformation in their overall mindset.
o Serve as an inspiration to peers through dedication and self-improvement.
o Have a minimum 2.5 GPA

1. A nomination letter detailing the nominee’s growth and transformation over time.
2. A supporting statement (300-400 words) from the nominee reflecting on their journey, challenges faced, and personal development.
3. Evidence of academic and personal growth, such as grade improvements, extracurricular involvement, or behavioral progress.
4. Any relevant recognitions or testimonials from mentors, teachers, or peers highlighting the nominee’s positive change. Positive influence on peers and the school community (20%)

The Watson Family Foundation is proud to offer two one-time $2,500 scholarships to the Automotive Excellence Scholarship to support aspiring automotive professionals who have demonstrated dedication, skill, and passion for the automotive industry. This scholarship is designed to assist students who have successfully completed the Maxwell High School of Technology (Lawrenceville, GA) General Automotive Program and are pursuing post-secondary education in a college, university, or technical school within the field of automotive studies.

Purpose:
o Encourage Post-Secondary Education: Support students in pursuing further education in automotive studies at colleges, universities, or technical schools.
o Foster Workforce Readiness: Help students transition successfully into the workforce by emphasizing skill development and industry preparedness.
o Promote Excellence in the Automotive Industry: Reward academic and technical achievements, such as earning Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
o Empower Future Leaders: Invest in students who are passionate about advancing their knowledge and careers in the automotive field.

Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify, applicants must:
o Successfully complete the Maxwell General Automotive Program.
o Achieve at least four entry-level Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
o Graduate with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Application Requirements:
Applicants must submit the following materials to their Maxwell Automotive teacher:
o Resume showcasing relevant achievements and experiences.
o A 500-word essay detailing:
1. Their interest in the field of automotive studies.
2. How their Maxwell High School experience has shaped their life and academic journey.
3. Their preparedness to enter the workforce in the automotive industry.
4. How receiving this scholarship would impact their educational and career goals.

o Attend the April Automotive Advisory Committee Meeting to introduce themselves to the board, share insights about their scholarship application, demonstrate knowledge of the Watson Family Foundation, its founders, and its initiatives.
Selection Process:
o The student and nominating teacher will complete the scholarship application materials and scholarship checklist. The packet will be submitted by the teacher to the selection committee made up of the automotive assistant principal, counselor, and member of the automotive advisory committee. The selection committee will review application materials and using the rubric and feedback from the advisory meeting presentations to determine the winners. Winners will be announced at the Maxwell Awards ceremony.

Scholarship funds can only be used for the following:
1. Automotive Technical school
2. Post-secondary classes in the field of automotive studies
3. College classes
4. Up to $500 may be used to pay for professional ASE certification tests
5. Up to $250 may be used (after enrollment and completion of post-secondary classes) to purchase automotive tool sets.

This scholarship is a testament to the Watson Family Foundation’s commitment to empowering future automotive leaders and fostering excellence in the industry.

The Pathfinder to Excellence Scholarship a one-time $2,000 scholarship honoring one or more outstanding graduating high school seniors in the Community-Based Mentoring Program who have demonstrated exceptional growth, leadership, and dedication to their personal and academic success. This scholarship celebrates the resilience and accomplishments of mentees who exemplify perseverance, excellence, and the drive to succeed.

Sponsored by Katrina Jones, this is a one-time award of $1,000 to be presented to a GCPS high school graduating senior in honor of Wayne W. Henley.

Requirements:

• • Applicant must have a minimum 2.7 GPA on a 4-pt. scale
  • Have plans to enroll full-time in an undergraduate course of study in science, technology, engineering, or math,
  • Provide a letter of reference from a faculty member
  • Submit a one-page essay describing interest in a STEM related career
