Many students who pay a visit to the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta go to the see the sharks, penguins and various underwater creatures. However, for a group of 12 girls from Sweetwater Middle School, the purpose of visiting the aquarium was to learn more about STEAM: science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Heidi Turcotte, manager of teaching and learning at the Georgia Aquarium, said the aquarium received a grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation in 2017 with the goal of providing a community program that would educate students. The grant, worth more than $14,000, supported a week-long remote-operated vehicle camp for the Sweetwater students and two school instructor chaperones.
