Gwinnett County Public Schools announces Teacher of the Year semifinalists

Gwinnett County Public Schools is one step closer to naming Gwinnett’s top educators for the 2017-18 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year.

On Monday, the committee announced the names of 25 semifinalists to be considered fort he system’s top honor. The group includes 15 elementary, five middle and five high school teachers who were selected from the initial list of 138 Teachers of the

Year nominated by their colleagues at local schools.
The winner will be announced in November at the annual Teacher of the Year banquet.

South Gwinnett JROTC receives highest commendation

The Gwinnett school board recently honored the South Gwinnett High School JROTC Comet Battalion, which recently earned the highest commendation level that an Army JROTC unit can receive.

The unit was named an “Honor Unit with Distinction” after inspectors from the Sixth Brigade of Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah gave it an overall score of 95.8 out of 100. The accreditation consists of a cadet continuous improvement briefing, cadet service learning project, drill ceremony and portfolio interviews by cadets and instructors.

The unit is led by Senior JROTC Instructor Lt. Col. Nathaniel Flegler Jr. and JROTC Instructor SFC LaKentra Smith.

Four Coleman Middle School teachers win Voya ‘Unsung Heroes’ grant for biosphere project

A New York-based retirement planning company has named a team of four Coleman Middle School teachers unsung heroes of the classroom for a project that teaches students about architecture, art, design and aquatics-based agriculture.

Voya Financial Inc. announced this week that Sheila Harmony, Jana Czerwonky, Tamara Rossi and Kelli Sinclair will be the recipients of a $2,000 grant distributed as part of the 2017 Voya Unsung Heroes awards competition. They will now compete against other grant recipients for one of three additional awards worth $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000.

GCPS nurse named Georgia’s School Nurse of the Year

The best school nurse in the state is caring for students in Gwinnett County Public Schools, according to the Georgia Association of School Nurses.

The state-wide group recently named GCPS nurse Fran Overdyke School Nurse of the Year for 2017.

“It really is an honor,” Overdyke said.

As a school nurse, Overdyke is tasked with putting together emergency or treatment plans for students with special health needs and teaching the schools they attend how to properly carry those plans out.

Meadowcreek Cluster awarded $20K STEM grant

A national STEM nonprofit recently gave a $20,000 continuation grant to the Meadowcreek Cluster to support its robotics, coding and STEM education.

The grant from FIRST will help “create access to hands-on STEM learning experiences for underrepresented and under-served students in the Meadowcreek Cluster.”

That money will go toward the Meadowcreek Cluster Robotics and Computational Thinking Program, which supports the cluster’s robotic teams. Students in kindergarten through third grade can join the FIRST LEGO League, Jr. robotics team while students in grades four through seven can join the FIRST LEGO League team.

If you’re looking for ways to support Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) students, your contribution to the GCPS Foundation Fund, Inc., can make a difference as we work to enrich and enhance education in the classroom and expand opportunities for our students heading to college.

Thanks to the generous support of business partners, community organizations, and caring individuals, the GCPS Foundation has raised more than $455,000 so far this calendar year, providing support for every school as well as scholarships for nearly 60 college-bound members of the Class of 2017.

And making a difference just got easier for our community with the launch of the GCPS Foundation mobile app!
