Schools donate to food co-ops as part of Great Days of Service

On Friday, boxes upon boxes of food and personal care items were delivered to the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry courtesy of local schools hoping to give back during the county’s Great Days of Service.

“It was wonderful,” said Laura Drake, who is the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op director. “It’s just a wonderful event every year.”

The Southeast Gwinnett Coop was one of nine co-ops that received donations from about 100 Gwinnett County schools on Friday.

Gwinnett school system announces Teacher of the Year finalists

Gwinnett County Public Schools announced its six finalists for the 2018 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year honor Friday.

These six teachers have been chosen from a field of 25 semifinalists by a selection committee comprised of GCPS officials. Those semifinalists were selected from the 138 local school Teachers of the Year.

Brookwood Grad Complete Navy Flight School

A Brookwood High School graduate and Snellville native recently completed Navy flight school to receive his aviation warfare insignia, known as “wings,” during a Winging Ceremony held at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Florida.

Lt. j.g. Christopher Joseph received his wings serving with Helicopter Training Squadron 18, the “Vigilant Eagles.” This insignia is issued to naval personnel who are trained and qualified to perform duties related to operation and support of naval aircraft.

Simpson Elementary capital campaign helps deliver Mimio technology interactive whiteboards

Simpson Elementary students recently received 45 interactive whiteboards thanks to a $32,000 capital campaign focused on technology upgrades in every classroom.

The capital campaign for the Peachtree Corners school took place during the 2016-17 school year as a centerpiece of PTA fundraising efforts.

Central Gwinnett students produce promotional video for Georgia Manufacturing Summit

A trio of Central Gwinnett High School students put their video-making skills to the test this semester while also helping the Lawrenceville-based Georgia Manufacturing Alliance promote its upcoming summit in Cobb County.

Nigel McGee, Robert Sima and Jakcob Zelaya, all students in the school’s Fine Arts and Communications Academy, have produced a 60-second video promoting the Georgia Manufacturing Summit. The academy and the alliance have a partnership designed to give students opportunities to produce real world work in the classroom.

The commercial is available on YouTube and highlights the event’s speakers and the presentation of the People of Manufacturing Awards.

Gwinnett’s Lovin Elementary Strengthens Learning Through Robotics

Students and teachers at Gwinnett County’s Lovin Elementary School are making great strides toward the future. And Infinite Energy is proud to lend a hand to this innovative Georgia school.

Earlier in the year, we gave eight Gwinnett County schools more than $47,000 in grants aimed at boosting education in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Lovin Elementary, with a grant of more than $5,000, was one of those schools. Teachers there used the money to buy robotics kits. “We were very excited,” said Lovin Elementary teacher Carol M. “Kids love robots! I remember the first time my fifth-grade students saw Dash (educational robots). They squealed! They were so excited and would stay in during recess for the opportunity to explore.”
