Brookwood High School media specialist Jan Wilson was named a national hero of her profession this week.

School Library Journal and Scholastic announced Wilson was one of its four hero librarians as part of its School Librarian of the Year announcement. Wilson was named the Hero of Collaboration and will receive $500 worth of materials that she will get to pick out, from Scholastic Library Publishing.

She was also recognized in the company’s print and online publications. In the article, she told Scholastic Library Journal that the credit for the success of programs she put in place at Brookwood do not just belong to her.

Chattahoochee Elementary is set to receive a multi-sensory math program for students with math disabilities thanks to a grant from the NEA Foundation.

Diane Rice, a special education teacher at Chattahoochee in Duluth, and partner Alexandra Prosser have received a $5,000 Student Achievement grant from the NEA Foundation. This grant will introduce TouchMath to their school.

“My colleagues and I have a strong belief that all children can learn … but not in the same way,” Rice said in a press release. “We must find out how each of our students learn and then locate the tools that work. TouchMath is based on research and on what we know about how children learn.”

Learning gardens have become popular across Gwinnett County Public Schools in recent years, most notably at Pharr Elementary, where state officials have toured.

This week, more schools received an infusion of funding thanks to a $20,000 grant from the nonprofit Keep America Beautiful to Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful as part of its community partners grant program.

The grant is designed to benefit communities with projects that focus on critical needs. Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful’s grant program is titled Project Plant it Forward. It’s a joint effort between Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful, GCPS, Monarchs Across Georgia and the Captain Planet Foundation, Project Plant It Forward to allow local schools to create edible and pollinator learning gardens.

Gwinnett County Public Schools on Thursday marked another milestone in its principal leadership development program.

At its workshop meeting with the Gwinnett County Board of Education, the district honored 11 people who completed the latest cohort, its 11th, and have plans to move on in leadership roles with the district.

“Clearly, the development of a healthy pipeline of leadership is an essential component for the current and future success of the students of Gwinnett County Public Schools,” said Glenn Pethel, assistant superintendent of leadership development.
 
Pethel said the district looks to the need for principals in relation to school growth, retirements and attrition.

Couch Middle School in Grayson will receive an NFL Flag Football kit from the Atlanta Falcons as part of NFL Flag Football Week and the Falcons’ Rise Up! 159 initiative.
 
One school in each of Georgia’s 159 counties were selected to receive the kit. The donations will go to 80 elementary schools and 79 middle schools.

Each kit includes 50 flag football belts, Falcons NFL reversible jerseys, football, water bottles, T-shirts and other supplies.

Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed Gwinnett County schools CEO/Superintendent Alvin Wilbanks to chair of a statewide committee to evaluate a proposed leadership academy for top educators. The committee is part of Deal’s ongoing efforts to have the state intervene in chronically failing schools.

Wilbanks is to guide the efforts of a 15-member committee that’s to recommend whether Georgia should create a leadership academy for school principals and other school leaders. Dec. 1 is the deadline for the committee to issue recommendations, including any proposed legislation to accomplish any recommendations.
