Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology teacher Ben Schepens was looking to make a difference. For more than two decades, Schepens had made a career working in the computer software field, but despite his success, something was missing.

“When I would go home most days after work it was just an average day,” Schepens said. “But when I was mentoring and tutoring people at the company about software, I found out myself to be in a better mood.”

While temperatures were hitting freezing point in the early morning hours of Dec. 16, droves of students from Sweetwater Middle School began the process of cleaning up Sweetwater Park.

Two years ago, Sweetwater Middle School, a feeder school to Berkmar High School, did not have a Junior Beta Club or National Junior Honor Society. That all changed with seventh-grade teacher Dawn Alexander, Principal Jay Nebel and eighth-grade teacher Clarisa Rene-Kinshasa.

Two Gwinnett County middle schools were named Breakout Schools by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals on Monday. Berkmar Middle School and Northbrook Middle School were recognized for their collaborative leadership, personalization, and curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Berkmar Middle School was one of only three schools statewide that earned the distinguished designation, which is awarded to schools which show commitment to meeting the needs of all students.
