Former Brookwood High School student Amanda Riley used to run down Dogwood Road, a tradition hundreds of cross-country runners continue to do during the fall.

As a freshman and sophomore she churned mile after mile of pavement and sidewalk on that road, and countless miles spent running in her neighborhood, Brookwood Manor, just a stone’s throw away from the high school.

Gwinnett County will benefit in multiple ways from work done by the Georgia General Assembly, but one of the biggest impacts might be in education, two of the county’s state legislators told the Gwinnett Chamber Friday.

State Rep. Chuck Efstration, R-Dacula, and Sen. P.K. Martin, R-Lawrenceville, said the last minute decision by state leaders to fully fund the state’s Quality Basic Education, or QBE, formula this year means more money for Gwinnett schools. The district will receive about $17.4 million more dollars than previously expect this year as a result of that decision, they said.

A service-based learning idea for a group of Cooper Elementary School students has turned into a way to spread the power of kindness.

In October, seven students on the school’s Destination Imagination team — Aubrey Meadows, Phillip Robinson, Ruthie Hendrix, Riley Kashella, Emma Masterson, Lilly Santos and Alexander Marshall — developed a simple but powerful idea: The Kindness Card.

The Parkview Cluster Foundation hosted its inaugural faculty dodgeball tournament April 12 and raised more than $2,000 to fund grants for teachers.

“We wanted a signature event that would raise money for our schools but also get the community together in a fun way,” Parkview Cluster Foundation Grant Selection Committee member Wendy Smith said.

Every week, Elizabeth Karivelil and Patrick Aghadiuno would spend an average of eight hours a week working. Formulas covered the walls of whiteboard as they took in the knowledge from their internship mentor, Simon Yunes at Micrometrics in Norcross.

On Thursday, the duo from Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology had one more bit of writing to do. This time it wasn’t on a wall or a whiteboard, but rather their recently published research paper.
