Gwinnett County Public Schools just opened the Paul Duke STEM High School, but officials are already looking ahead to the district’s next theme school, which is being built in the Meadowcreek cluster.

During Thursday’s school board work session, school officials gave an update on the yet-to-be-named Meadowcreek Cluster Health Science High School set to open in August 2019. The school, which is under construction at the intersection of Club Drive and Steve Reynolds Boulevard, is expected to be 300,000 square feet and accommodate 1,500 students.

Thirty percent of Gwinnett County Public Schools teachers will receive one-time monetary awards a little more than a year from now — but which educators receive those awards will depend on how their students do this year.

Superintendent Alvin Wilbanks talked at length about the district’s new “performance-based awards” during his State of the School System Address to the Gwinnett Chamber on Wednesday. The new program is part of the district’s efforts to address a national issue of district’s struggling to retain teachers.

Films created by Gwinnett County Public Schools students are hitting the Big Apple for the 2018 All American High School Film Festival this fall.

The school district announced on Tuesday that seven films created by Lanier High students and one animated film created by a Brookwood student will be shown in the AMC Theater 25 in New York City’s Times Square.
