As someone who makes a living in part by public speaking and inspiring others, Kyle Maynard’s induction speech for the Gwinnett Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017 should be a snap.

Yet when he takes to the podium for tonight’s induction ceremony, the Suwanee native and Collins Hill graduate admits it may be one of the more difficult speeches in quite some time.

The overriding theme for the 2017 Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony revolved around the sense of family and community felt by all five class members.

So it should come as no surprise that Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn gave the audience in attendance at the Grand Ballroom of the Infinite Energy Center on Friday night a taste of what was to come as the evening’s keynote speaker.

And it wasn’t merely playing to the audience, since the 46-year-old Suwanee resident, who guided the Falcons to just their second Super Bowl appearance in only his second season as a head coach this past year, has come to call Gwinnett County home.

Like a lot of previous induction classes from the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame, the five-person Class of 2017 spanned a vast range of generations and backgrounds.

From the athletic and coaching career of Jack Britt in the the post-World War II years to Tony Akins’ basketball career in the late 1990s to the more recent heydays of Courtney Puckett-Oros, Chad Hall and Kyle Maynard, Friday night’s induction ceremony — hosted by South Gwinnett grad and Fox 5 Atlanta TV personality Buck Lanford with Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn as the keynote speaker — for this year’s class was in some ways a Gwinnett County history lesson.
